Eczema

Eczema is a chronic skin condition that can cause recurring redness, flaking skin, and discomfort. A dermatologist can help improve your symptoms and reduce the frequency of eczema.

What is Eczema?

eczemaEczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic condition characterized by red, dry, and itchy skin. These symptoms may be accompanied by blisters that leak. Over time, some people may develop thick skin or changes in the appearance of their skin. This condition typically recurs over time in ‘flare-ups’ that may last days, months, or sometimes years before subsiding again.

Eczema in adults typically occurs on the hands and feet, the back of the neck, the back of the knees, and the interior of the elbow joint.

Eczema in children typically occurs on the back, the stomach and chest, the arms, the legs, and cheeks.

Symptoms of eczema include:

  • Patches of red or brown skin
  • Itchiness
  • Rashes
  • Thickened skin
  • Cracked skin
  • Scaly skin
  • Blisters that leak fluid

Eczema may be treated with one or a combination of medication, topical creams or ointments, or avoiding triggers.

Eczema Triggers

eczema

It is not currently known what causes eczema. It is thought that eczema is largely hereditary, as many people who have eczema will also have a family member who has the same condition. Allergies or an abnormal immune response may also contribute to eczema. Many people may not have symptoms of eczema unless exposed to a trigger.

The triggers of eczema varies from person to person. Some people may find that a combination of dry skin and dry air can make it easier for the skin to react and cause symptoms. Others may find that environmental factors such as certain fragrances, lotions, or fabrics may contribute to flare-ups.

Eczema triggers may include:

  • Soaps and detergents
  • Pollen
  • Mold and mildew
  • Cold and dry air
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Food allergies
  • Certain types of fabric
  • Stress

If you are unsure what your triggers are, Andover Dermatology will work with you to identify what may be causing your flare-ups.
